PREMIER MAKHENKESI STOFILE AND MECS FOR AGRICULTURE AND PUBLIC WORKS AT MOUNT CURRIE.

National Minister of Public Works Stella Sigcau and Eastern Cape Premier Makhenkesi Stofile accompanied by two of his MECs, had a meeting 
at Mount Currie in Kokstad today to discuss joint reconstruction and poverty alleviation programmes.The MECs were Pumullo Masualle of 
Roads and Public Works as well as Max Mamase of Agriculture and Land Affairs.

The meeting was on Minister Stella Sigcaus request in order to brief the Premier and the MECs on the departments poverty alleviation 
plans and also to get an update on the progress made in implementing the emergency reconstruction programme following the devastation of 
the provinces infrastructure by the recent disasters.

Minister Sigcau outlined the Departments plans of establishing Community Production and Multi-Purpose Community Centers as part of the 
Public Works Programme to which Public Works has invested R7 million for the current financial year.The Minister was also briefed on the 
progress made in utilizing the R40 million allocated for the post disaster reconstruction programme.MEC for Public Works Pumullo Masualle 
said the allocated R40 million has been committed for rebuilding the provinces road infrastracture and adjudication by the Provinces 
Tender Board is now awaited before the actual reconstruction begins.

Commenting on the meeting Minister Sigcau said the Department is shifting its focus in fighting poverty from community gardens to more 
sustainable local economic development nodes or centers. Projects cited for possible injection of capital include Lambasi, Ntafufu, 
Malangeni, Ncora and other irrigation schemes of the former homelands which are now earmarked for transformation to run along the business 
lines.

Premier Makhenkesi Stofile hailed the meeting as a significant step towards the desired integrated development planning and implementation, 
which would make a real difference on the lives of the people.He said the planned assistance would assist communities to get jobs and above 
all place food on the tables of millions of people of the province.

The meeting marked the beginning of a week long hectic Exco Outreach Programme in Umzimkhulu district and its environs.The Premier and his 
Executive Council are currently in the district to meet various stakeholders and communities to discuss their needs and aspirations.
